Paris Wanderlust: What Is the Job of a Cemetery Cat?

I’ve spent a lot of time in Paris cemeteries. One day, the little cat below graciously gave me a tour of Montparnasse Cemetery, explaining his duties along the way.

What is the job of a cemetery cat?

Come with me and I’ll show you.

Trimming the bark

Inspecting the crypts

Standing sentinel

Ignoring great art

Greeting the cousin

Ignoring the cousin

Fertilizing the roses

Marking territory

Claiming unmarked graves

Contemplating mortality

A cemetery cat’s job is never done.

  1. This is an especially touching passage, Camille! I have shared your bog with a fellow francophile. Hugs, Sheila, just back from a brief step into New Orleans. Train trip there and back in a sleeper car for a completely getaway!

    • Thank you, Sheila! Glad you liked my cemetery cat post. To quote Ignatius Reilly, “When my brain begins to reel from my literary labors, I make an occasional cheese dip.” So great that you got to visit New Orleans again. Aren’t sleeper cars great?

  2. I enjoy all your posts so there’s no reason why I’ve liked this one about the cat and not all the others as well. Many thanks.

  4. Hi Camille,
A friend in Ohio sent me a link to your blog post here, which I enjoyed very much. Having lived in or near Paris for the past 28 years, I’ve been a frequent visitor to cemeteries in the area, and have met many feline friends in various places. (But I haven’t met your Montparnasse guide pictured here, so was happy to see your pictures.) If by chance you use Instagram, you could see plenty of evidence of my funereal feline photos in my gallery at : owenphil333

If perhaps you also use Facebook, there is a rather wonderful group there run by a woman in England, the group is appropriately called : Cemetery Cats

Am quite sure the members of the Cemetery Cats group would love to see your pictures from Montparnasse if you were to join the group and post some there. Perhaps you have more cemetery kitty pictures from Montmartre or Saint Vincent or Père Lachaise or….. ?

In any case, it was a pleasure to see your post here from Montmartre, lovely that your guide was willing to pose by the ceramic cat sculpture, that’s priceless.

Funny, your guide looks very much like a guide I had in Lecce, Italy in February 2019, who led me straight to a sphinx statue which he wanted me to see. Pictures of that encounter are in Instagram, if you had a minute to scroll back to them.

    Nice to “meet” you virtually,
    Owen
